Tipton St John hosted Exeter side Bakers, who batted first and despite losing two early wickets, both through John Buckland catches off the bowling of Owen Smith, they reached 87 without further alarm.

Bakers then lost six wickets in adding just another 18 runs. Mark Channon and Phil Wright both took two wickets each as Bakers slumped to 105-8. A good 10th wicket unbroken partnership of 33 took the score to 159-9. John Buckland with 3-12 off 8 overs did the damage at the end.

Phil Tolley and David Rowe spearheaded Tipton’s reply with a partnership of 66. Rowe had a charmed life, giving chances on six occasions before he reached 50! He lost Tolley as a partner when trapped LBW on 23 but then added a further 51 with Dave Thayre.

Having reached 65 off 92 balls, Rowe was eventually bowled by Michael Lloyd. Mark Burnard was run out attempting an optimistic second run, but that signalled the arrival of John Buckland, who hit a quick 31 not out off 20 balls to take Tipton to victory with six overs to spare. Thayre was undefeated on 26.

It was not a surprise that Buckland won the ’John Williamson player of the match award’.
