Sidmouth Rugby Club defeated the Army Under 23s in their final warm-up game before the league season starts.

The hard-fought match showed Sidmouth's strong defence and competitive spirit as they beat the Army 19-14.

The game started with the Army applying significant pressure, but Sidmouth held its ground, breaking out to score first.

Jake Smith was the breakthrough player, scoring the first try, and he added the conversion from wide out.

Sidmouth took control midway through the half when they turned over possession just inside the Army's half.

Finn Lashbrook, full back, pulled a rapid move to the wing and outpaced to score in the corner. His try remained unconverted, and after the break, the situation was a repeat.

The Army regained possession and tried to penetrate the Sidmouth defence but to no avail.

Sidmouth's Sam Heathcote had a promising run, but a knock-on brought the move to an end.

At the half-time whistle, the score was 12-0 in favour of Sidmouth.

Early into the second half, Sidmouth surged ahead as Connor Preston touched down under the posts after a fortunate bounce from a charged downkick, with Jake Smith adding the conversion.

As Sidmouth fielded several changes, the Army capitalised to score two tries, both converted, though Sidmouth held on for the win.

For the final 20 minutes, Sidmouth and the Army seemed evenly matched, but Sidmouth held on and triumphed.

Sidmouth now prepares for their opening league game against Exmouth, kicking off at 3pm this Saturday.

The Quins and the Colts also have their games set against North Tawton and Ivybridge Colts respectively, both scheduled to be played at Sidford.
