A 15-year-old golfer has made the cut for an England Golf regional training squad after a season that included a county title and regular appearances in senior competition.
Archie Griffiths, of Sidmouth Golf Club, has been selected for one of England Golf’s Regional Training Squads for 2026/27.
He has become a regular in the Devon men’s first team and earned his first call-up for South West Week at Isle of Purbeck Golf Club in June.
Archie won the Devon Under-16 Championship at Honiton in May and finished runner-up in the Under-18 Championship. He also took fourth place in the Devon Salver at Churston, finished fifth in the Gold Medal at Royal North Devon and reached the quarter-finals of the County Amateur Championship.
He played all but one match for each of Devon’s Under-18 and Under-16 teams as both sides won their respective Peninsula Leagues in 2026.
His junior team season included a tied-fifth finish in the Four Counties Medal at Woodbury Park in April, followed by two-and-a-half points from three matches.
Beyond Devon, Archie finished tenth in the South West Counties Under-16/Under-14 Championship at Bude and 15th in the Douglas Johns Trophy at Harewood Downs.
He also finished seventh in the North of England Under-16 Championship at Heswall and 23rd in the West of England Under-16 Championship at Filton.
Archie was runner-up on scratch in the junior opens at Stover and Churston, before recording top-five finishes at both Kingsknowe and Hamilton golf clubs in Scotland.
He has a handicap index of +0.9. DevonGolf described his selection as a reward for his work and a testament to its junior pathway.
Another Devon golfer, Harry Cann, narrowly missed out on selection after being shortlisted for the regional squads.
The 15-year-old from Saunton is the reigning Devon men’s county champion.
