All the fun of the fair

‘Highways and Skyways’ is Axe Valley’s version of Sidmouth’s Four Trigs, a self-navigation route with no back markers, marshals and only a couple of manned checkpoints, writes Lesley Roberts.

Lesley Roberts, Lynda Hawkins, Helen Palmer and Terry Bewes, took in 8 ‘Tops’, crossing stunning countryside, the climax being Golden Cap, the highest point on the South Coast. The finale is either two miles along the beach or another 600 ft climb. There are no prizes or mementos but a very nice man from Axe Valley greeted us with a cup of tea at the end, which is what you really want after completing this 18 mile, five hour challenge!

?For those less masochistic, the Sidbury Fun Run was a much happier affair. The whole population of the village seems to get involved and it has a lovely atmosphere. The run itself is enjoyable and, although results are difficult to come by, there were some very good performances. Guy Bennett retained his title with a comfortable win in just over 20 minutes and Lucy Owen, after a battle with Jane Beech and Naomi Garrick, was the first lady home. Naomi, in fact, was rather taken aback when her 13 year old son just beat her to the line!

Zak Francis, just released from hospital and with a canula still in his arm, beat most Sidmouth runners while ‘taking it easy’!

?Tim Mitchell and Justin Ashby braved gale-force winds and high seas to register sub three hour times in the Weymouth Classic Triathlon.

The 1.5km sea swim, 40km bike race plus 10k run took place despite the Weymouth-Jersey ferry crossing being cancelled due to rough seas.

As the protein recovery shakes were consumed by the finishers, they were able to watch the surfers, who were, by then, enjoying the waves!
