George Barber won the Aylmer Cup at Sidmouth last Saturday, writes George Carr.

Barber lifted the handsome trophy in fine style with a net 59 leaving the rest trailing in his wake with the nearest challenger, David Bater, four shots adrift on 63.

Barber started off with a birdie on the first and then two more on the 10th and 12th to help him on to victory and even Bater’s magnificent finish with four birdies in the last six holes were of no avail at the last.

Mariner John Welch’s net 65 for third place being all the more remarkable since he had to record a horrible-looking nine on his card as he walked off the third green; so well done John on an excellent recovery and well played gentlemen all and many congratulations to George Barber on his triumph and his new handicap of ten which I am sure will be very temporary as he moves into single figures.
