A tussle for the ages at Ottery Bowls

A battle as old as time was fought on the bowling green in Ottery on Sunday.
Not the battles against Spain, although the Spanish memorably tried to stop a bowls match, and not the embargo placed by Henry VIII against the game, but a further round in the battle of the sexes!
The morning match was played in bright sunshine, but by the afternoon, hail and rain had set in. Thankfully, most players had come prepared with their white pac-a-macs.
The result is immaterial as I would not wish to gloat. The real winner was the game of bowls as friendships were renewed, laughter that has been stifled for too long was again heard, and on the green, smiles took the place of masked faces.
On Sunday, May 16, in conjunction with Bowls England, the bowling club will be holding an open day from 10am to 3pm, when anyone can come along to try out the game. Call Gail Hawke on 07772 134253.
