Beer luggers had two races back-to-back on Monday and seven launched from the beach in a very light, variable wind with a strong tide running up channel.The Cuckoo led the first race from the starting line, followed by Moondance and the Puffin, but, by having to do penalty turns, the Puffin lost a lot of ground.As the boats raced to the windward mark, the Percy Mitchell came through to reach it first, with Cuckoo second and Scrumpy, who also had to do penalty turns, third. All the luggers had problems reaching the mark because of the strong tide and light winds and the race finished after the first round, due to the state of the wind.There was a general re-call at the start of the second race. Some luggers had crossed the line before the hooter was sounded.The wind freshened considerably during the race adding to the entertainment for members and visitors ashore.The Cuckoo had to do penalty turns. As the race progressed, the Percy Mitchell once again increased her lead and went on to win easily after four rounds.The Puffin had to retire because of gear failure.There was keen racing between the Cuckoo and Mary with the Cuckoo taking second position and Scrumpy arriving for third.Results of the first race: 1, Percy Mitchell, D McCrea; 2, Cuckoo, G Dart; 3, Scrumpy, G Lockyer; 4, Moondance, G Pook; 5, Mary, D Boalch; 6, Catherine, T Tolman; 7.
