Beer Regatta sea angling competition has just taken place out from Beer.

On a perfect day for the event, four boats took 32 anglers out to fish all the reefs between Beer and Lyme Regis in search of a variety of different species of fish.

The event was well-organised by Beer and District SAA. The idea on the day was to catch as many different species of fish as possible, with only one fish allowed to the scales of each species. In all 12 different fish were caught and the winner of the competition caught eight different species which included scad, dogfish, pouting, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, conger, gurnard, pollack and black bream.

Whilst the weigh-in was taking place, the gathering crowd were given a short talk on some of the fish caught on the day and, as in previous years, a barbecue was set up and a lot of the fish caught on the day were cooked up and given out for the crowd to try. Judging by the queue at the table, everyone was enjoying the fishy treats on offer.

In first place, and taking the Regatta Angling Cup, was Terry Hartnell (Honiton Sea Angling Club). Terry scored 398 per cent and this was enough to win him the £40 prize, plus half the pool money. The runner-up spot went to Tom Travers (Honiton Sea Angling Club) Tom scored 381 per cent and won £30. Third spot went to Les Bradbeer of the organising club, Beer and District with 328 per cent. The best fish caught on the day went to Micky Leach with a Cuckoo Wrasse of 1-7-0 and the Jamie Dommett memorial cup for the best Black Bream award went to Mike Spiller and R Bradbeer, who both had fish of 3-4-8.

The Sean and Ali Memorial Cup for the highest number of species caught went to Terry Hartnell (9).

Best skipper on the day went to David Newton, whose anglers caught a total catch of 2326 per cent. This won him the Jason Bewick Memorial Cup.
