Following a miserable midweek defeat at the hands of basement dwellers Axminster Town the Vikings returned to winning ways with a superb performance as they defeated Newton Abbot Spurs 4-1 at Manstone Lane.

Town boss Josh Stunell range the changes and gave first starts to 16-year-old duo Ollie Binnion and Tyler Wellman as well as a second start of the term for Jake Boyland.

Sadly the latter’s afternoon lasted just five minutes when he was inured and carried from the pitch with what looked a nasty knee injury.

With Boyland needing replacing it was Mark Pavey, one of a number of players ‘omitted’ by the Town boss, who got the early call from the bench.

It did not take Pavey long before he was in the thick of the action and, when he was played in by Tony Cox, the striker needed no second invitation to plant the ball beyond the Spurs glovesman.

Soon after Pavey was again the scorer, this time curling a superb strike into the top corner of the visitors net!

With young Wellman impressing in central midfield, forging an excellent partnership with Aaron Doble, the only things surprising about the half-time whistle was that it was blown with Town still only two goals to the good, such was their dominance.

After the break there was more of the same from a confident home side and even when the visitors struck back with success from a rare counter-attack, there seemed little doubt as to the final outcome of the contest! They did have a good chance to level things up, but home glovesman Alex Bowring made a wonderful save in a one-on-one situation with a Spurs forward.

However, thereafter it was all Town and the two goal advantage was restored when Pavey provided a flick-on that got Ashley Small beyond the last man and he calmly slotted beyond the glovesman.

In the closing minutes Small crossed for the unmarked Cameron Vere to head home his fourth goal of the season to complete the scoring in what was a mighty impressive all-round show from the Vikings.

One big feature of the afternoon was the number of excellent youngsters the home side had on show with 16-year-olds Binnion, Wellman and central defender Jamie Newbery all looking as if they had been playing at senior level for many moons!

Young Binnion was named Man of the Match for his superb shift at right back.
