Sidmouth bowlers had another large dose of mixed fortunes last week, writes John Mason.

The week started with yet another match against Honiton for the men’s team.

This time the meeting was in the semi-final of the Foxlands trophy, a competition played with one rink ant home and one rink away.

It was a very closely fought match with victory eventually going to Honiton by just four shots overall.

A rescheduled game in the Over-60s League saw the A team return to winning ways with an important 6-2 win over Uffculme. After good results the previous week, the B and C teams both lost, but there’s still plenty of opportunities for both teams to gain promotion.

The attraction of a visit to Sidmouth to play a game of triples last Saturday was such that visitors from Tiverton requested an additional rink.

However, the home side took no prisoners and won all five games with the top rink being Terry Rawlings, Mike Daw and Susie Bonnell (skip).

On Sunday there was a trip to Bradninch where there are lovely views across to Haldon Forest. What’s more our hosts also laid on a fly past from the Red Arrows! This proved to be a very difficult rink to play and even experienced bowlers struggled with the green. Nevertheless, Sidmouth won on three of the four rinks and by an overall score of 74 shots to 66.

The top Sidmouth rink was the one of Mary Smith, Derek Mountford, Brenda Somerfield and John Mason (skip).
