Ottery St Mary climbed to sixth in Macron League Division Three after a 3-2 win at Budleigh Salterton.
The final score did not tell the whole story for, early in the second half the Otters were two goals down!
The first half was a goalless affair, though both sides had several opportunities. The deadlock was broken 11 minutes into the second half with Adam Wilkinson netting and, just a minute later, Elliott Mann doubled the lead to put the home side into a commanding position.
It was not until the 73rd minute that the Otters found a way back into the game with Ben Rushton’s strike being carried by the wind into the home net.
Just as the home side had done, the visitors added a second a single minute after their first – again Rushton was the scorer.
Both teams then fashioned chance to win the game with a third before, late in the game, Adam Brook rifled home a free-kick to see Ottery depart with all three points.
Ottery boss Dave Fairweather said of his side’s overall performance: “It is obviously really pleasing to have got the three points, but overall I was disappointed in our show. For the first half we were by far the better side, but we spurned three gilt-edged chances and, on another day, would probably have paid the price for missing such opportunites. So, all in all, I am delighted to have won, but can’t help being disappointed with what we served up over the 90 odd minutes. We can play better than that, and we will.”
