Alphington 3, Sidmouth FC U13s 2

Sidmouth, away at top of the table Alphington, produced their worst performance for some time on a small pitch and in windy conditions, writes Jo Newbery.

They went into the halftime break 2-0 down. A second half revival saw Sidmouth come back into the game and they used the conditions to their advantage, to claw their way back into the game with two great strikes from Tyler Wellman levelling. In the last minute, poor defending let an Alpha striker ride four tackles to score the winner. A game for most of the team to forget

Sidmouth FC U13s 6, Exeter Civil Service 2

In a bright opening spell, Jamie Newbery scored Sidmouth’s first, getting on the end of Charlie Freeman’s header which ricocheted back off the bar, writes Paul Newbery.

Sid played great football with Wellman and Alistair Forsyth driving forward. Good inter play from Freeman and Jack DeWinton saw the latter through on goal and he scored. This drove Civil on and they forced themselves back into the game with a goal to make it 2-1.

Sidmouth found themselves up against it and Civil equalised with a great strike. Civil were unlucky not to go into the half time brake in front.

After the break, a change in formation saw Sid score again through Ed Golding. George Harris scored from a short corner, the ball flying into the net to give Sid a bit of breathing space. Civil were deflated and Sam Hicks hit another tremendous shot that went into the far corner. Freeman made it six with a great run and shot. A great second half display against the team that came runner up to Sidmouth in the league last Season.

Sunday team

Axminster U13s, 2, Sidmouth FC U13s 3

On the day that Manchester City thumped United Sidmouth under 13s sported their new light blue kit for the first time in their match against Axminster, writes Sean Murphy.

They returned home with a 3-2 victory, despite only having nine players available. The first half saw Sidmouth playing with a strong breeze at their backs and totally dominated the play,in fact it was hard to see which team had 11 players and which had 9.

It took until midway through the half for defender-come-midfielder-come-striker Jamie Newbery to latch onto a through ball from Connor Murphy to score at the near post.

The back three of Tom Orchard, Jonny Surtees and Matt Jones dealt with any attacks which left keeper Tyler Hillier a virtual spectator.

Second half goals were scored by Newbery and Stone before Axminster pulled a goal back. With about 15 minutes to go Forsyth and Orchard (broken wrist) were injured and Sidmouth had seven players on the pitch. Axminster took advantage, pulling another goal back. Forsyth returned to the fray to help out his colleagues and it was all hands to the pumps to keep Axe out.

Axminster sensed they could get something from the game but Sidmouth held out for the final nervy 10 minutes.

Manager Sean Murphy said "I am full of praise and admiration for these lads they put in a real shift.

“The result was marred by the injury to Tom, as our worst fears were confirmed when we heard he had dislocated and broken his wrist. All the lads, myself and the parents wish him the speediest of recoveries."
