A look at how the three Sidmouth and two Ottery St Mary XIs did on match day four of the Tolchards Devon Cricket League season.

Opener Josh Bess scored a superb run-a-ball century to see Sidmouth to what was eventually a comprehensive 153-run win over Hatherleigh.

Bess was finally dismissed by the 126th ball he faced – trapped leg before – but no before he had 129 with a dozen fours and half-a-dozen sixes.

It needed just two balls more than 37 overs for Sidmouth to knock the home side over. All five of the bowlers used claimed at least one wicket.

Josh Bess completed a fine all-round effort with 2-26 from his new ball spell of eight overs. Aviwe Mgijima shared the new ball duties and his return was a splendid 3-12 from 5.2 overs. Will Murray, bowling as first change, send down 10 overs for his 2-29 return and spinner Charlie Moles also sent down a full compliment of 190 overs with his figures being 2-41. Liam Lewis, makings his first appearance of the season for the Fortfield men, bowled four overs of a 1-15 return.

Ollie West scored a second successive century as Ottery St Mary scored a run rate victory over visiting Clyst Hydon.

Batting first, the Otters powered their way to an imposing total of 315-8 with the West innings eclipsing all other as was eventually dismissed for 138.

Jack Malden chipped in with 44 while other knocks came from Rob Johns (33), Alex Clements (21) and Dan Flower (21).

Clyst Hydon were labouring on 186-8 when the rains arrived to wash out play, but there had been sufficient action for Ottery to be declared the victors.

That man West cannot be kept out of the action with bat or ball right now for he bagged a three wicket haul, his figures being 3-29 and a brace for Dan Jeacock (2-34) helped Ottery to a third win in four games and they sit third in the C Division East table just 12 points behind table-topping Sidmouth 2nds.

Sidmouth 2nds remain top and have now won all four of their matches in the new all-through format with their latest success being a 10-wicket mauling of Braunton at the Fortfield. The visiting side batted first and were bundled out for 132. Toby Seldon (3-28), Charlie Dibble (2-27) and Daley Holmes 2-18) did the damage with the ball. Openers Isaac Thomas (70no) and Nick Mansfield (40no) saw the home side to a comfortable victory.

Ottery St Mary 2nd XI suffered their first defeat of the E Division East season when they went down by 168 runs in a high scoring affair at Kentisbeare. Batting first, the home were given a terrific start with a double century opening stand between father and son combination of Paul and Rory Tatterton. A second wicket was only claimed when the home side had just reached 300 and they went on to close on 412-6 after 45 overs.

Seven bowlers were used by Ottery skipper Richard Jackson, but all, on the small Kentisbeare ground, went for plenty of runs! In terms of wicket taking, it was youngster Lawrence Walker who returned the best figures with 3-78 from a full shift of nine overs.

Jack Dallyn also sent down nine overs and he got two wickets, but he went for 111 runs and the other five bowlers were without a wicket – James Anderson (0-34 from four), Tom Jeacock (0-61 from eight), Ashok Prasad (0-15 from two), Matt Jeacock (0-55 from five) and Max Moore (0-53 from eight).

The Ottery reply saw Eddie Rudolph run out for four, but number three Tom Jeacock stuck around with opener Anthony Dean before Jeacock feel for a 44-ball eight boundary 36.

It was the Dean knock that kept the reply going, he went on to score 124 from 128 balls faced and he hit 24 fours. Number nine Matt Jeacock chipped in with an unbeaten 20, but the Ottery close of 242-8 left them well short of the home total.

Sidmouth III saw their unbeaten start to their life in the F Division East ended as they went down to the only other unbeaten side in the section, Seaton II. Batting first on their own track, Seaton 2nds were bowled out for what looked a low total of 128. Jordan Fowler continued his fine early season form with figures of 4-14. However, Sidmouth lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 119 with the top two batting contributions coming from Wes Holmes (18) and young Fowler (16).
