Sidmouth 64, Pulborough 10 Rugby matches, it turns out are like buses, you don’t have one for ages then three come along in eight days, writes Chris Robinson.
After Sidmouth Under-14s fantastic win in the Devon cup semi-final, which takes them to their second Final in two years, confidence was high.
This in turn led to some sublime rugby on a surprisingly spring like Friday evening. It was a tale of five quarters, which I admit sounds wrong, but which turned out to be so Wright!
Charlie Wright had a superb game, full of running, aggression and skill. He scored two tries, but set up three as well. Pulborough, possibly wish they had stayed in Sussex. This was not a one man show however and the team really pulled together. The scrum dominated. Captain Hughes and his fellow prop Chugg-White laid the platform and the back row reaped the rewards. Moore scored three excellent tries. It was the link play that really caught the eye though. Centre Allen’s second try was arguably the pick of the bunch, as he finished the break he had started having gone through several pairs of Sidmouth hands. Counsell, as ever, was terrific and he and Down both also got a try a piece. Pulborough were a good side and scored twice and would have scored more, but for try saving tackles from Morgan and an excellent one from Davies whilst playing at full back. The whole squad should take credit for playing the game in such good spirit and it most certainly was a joy to watch!
