Chasing the greenkeepers!
PUBLISHED: 15:33 17 May 2012
Wednesday dawned a bright and sunny day, the Ladies’ Section had invited the Gentlemen from the club to the second mixed competition following the success of last year’s event, writes Liz Chance.
The format was Mixed American Greensomes where both players drive and then play each other’s ball, then choose the ball to take and continue to play alternately. This format caused confusion for some players but expert competition and handicap secretary, Ros Eaton and her assistant Angela Coles were able to sort out any problems.
The greenkeepers were busy doing essential work on the greens so the first players out were following machinery and men who were ensuring that every green was open for the competition.
Players at the end of the field drove from the first tee with a view of a temporary 18th green and the main green looking far from ready for play, but the greenkeepers worked their magic and it was completed in record time.
Sheila Tallon and Nigel Sharpe came in with a fabulous 40 points, earning them first place, apparently the first golf competition Sharpe has won. In second place, after countback, was Mavis Vanstone and her partner Roger Bawden with 36 points followed by Coral Roberts and Ray Gunstone. There were three pairs who achieved a two.
At the prizegiving, Anne Blackler, the lady captain, thanked lady members who had contributed to the success of the event and thanked the gentlemen for participating and making the day so enjoyable. A good time was had by all playing golf in glorious weather.
