For Exeter City last Saturday’s away trip to Bootham Crescent, home of York City was the longest away-day journey of the season but that did not stop them securing their fifth straight away victory, writes Gareth Hughes.

The Grecians will have enjoyed the long journey back with a 2-1 win ensuring that another three points were added to their tally taking them to fifth place in the table, and only two points off the automatic promotion places.

This was City’s ninth away win and without suspended prolific scorer Jamie Cureton Alan Gow led the attack.

Although City took the lead in the 14th minute it was York who made most of the first half which fortunately for Exeter included an impressive own goal by their own forward Alex Rodman.

This was totally against the run of play and, when Jimmy Keohane broke through the midfield, and cut the ball to John O’Flynn in the penalty box, Rodman, in an attempt to clear the danger, drove the ball past his own keeper with a drive which any striker would have been immensely proud of.

As it was York did not take too long to make amends with a 1-1 score line at half time . Within five minutes of the own goal York midfielder Michael Potts stabbed the ball past City stopper Artur Krysiak following a good Minstermen move.

If the first half belonged to York, the second 45 minutes saw the Grecians in the driving seat and this was partly brought about with some Tisdale tinkering when he bought on Kevin Amankwaah at half-time, which negated first half Minstermen threats.

The second and winning goal game eight minutes into the second half when Jimmy Keohane was picked out at the back post by substitute Amankwaah and with his effort scored his very first goal in professional football.

Other news from the club include the signing of 22-year-old Myles Anderson, following his release from Blackburn Rovers. Manager Paul Tisdale, clearly delighted with his capture, commented: “We’ve seen Anderson play and there’s a lot of potential there, so we are excited about the possibility of seeing his development with us. We’re looking at this with a view to a player that can break through into the first team.”

?This Saturday, City are home to high flying Southend who are sixth in the league table.

They are another team whose away form is better than their home form having won six games on their travels and only five at home. Another tough challenge at home. Come on you Reds !
