Despite just falling short in their bid to win the League title, it has been a terrific season in Sky Bet League Two for Exeter City and a promotion parade through the City saw thousands take to the streets in celebration.
The Grecians slipped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Port Vale on the final day, allowing Forest Green Rovers to pip them to the title but promotion to the third tier is the big prize, and Bristol Rovers also grabbed a place in League One to make it a South-West hat-trick.
Speaking to the Exeter City club website, manager Matt Taylor said: "We have to find a way to celebrate, despite the defeat and losing out on the title. There wasn't too much in the game. Their ‘keeper pulled off a good save and they scored with a moment of quality.
"It was a frustrating second half. We never quite got going and didn't get the ball exactly where we want. As soon as the disappointment disperses, we're back in celebration mode. We understand what we've achieved this season."
Along with the football celebrations, East Devon sport fans can look forward to a first in the rugby pitch, as the Exeter Chiefs women’s team secured a historic place in the Premier 15s play-offs.
It is the first time the Chiefs have made it to this stage of the women’s game and they reached their goal with an outstanding 54-12 victory over league leaders Saracens.
A win in their final game against Bristol would secure second place in the Premier 15s table in just their second season, having joined the league in 2020.
Exeter head coach Susie Appleby told BBC Radio Devon: "We wanted to win today, we've done that, we want to win next week and we want play at home in front of our home crowd, and that's what we'll work on this week and fingers crossed we can get that.
"I'm not saying we're perfect, by any means, but we're becoming quite a complete outfit and a real challenge to play against, which is really pleasing,"
