Sidmouth Golf Club captain John Rockey, along with his charming wife Bev, certainly put in a full shift on what proved to be a very happy Captains Day event for all concerned last Saturday, writes George Carr.

The pairs smiling welcome and fast food outlet above the tenth green cheered many a determined golfer onward towards the 19th hole as the sun shone brighter by the minute.

Played in two divisions for the gentlemen, while the ladies had their separate competition, the day provided some excellent golf - and of course the other variety, which is always with us!

There were lots of prizes and therefore winners, so my apologies if you are not all mentioned.

Ladies first of course! Marie Clapp and Penny Ashby swept to a clear victory with 55 points, three points clear of Angela Coles and Sheila Tallon whose excellent 52 left them clear of the pack pressing hard behind them.

Yvonne Anning and Sheila Thomson gained third spot a shot behind. Coral Roberts and Janet Humberstone, Margaret Thompson and Shiela Skitrall were all leaders in the club house for a long while only to be disappointed at the last - such is life!

The Men’s Division One winning duo, club manager Jonathan Peter Lee and vice captain Dave Pepperell, carded 61 points late on in the day to pip Moray Bosence and Craig Melluish by one point and leave them in second place.

The best score of the day came from Men’s Division Two winners, Nick Bater and Nigel Sharp who posted 62 points, two points clear of John Nicolle and A Dean in second. Bob Welsman and Colin Macklin took the next prize and gave us the widest smile of the day - well done indeed.

There were nearest the pin prizes on every hole - the only one I shall report on is the 12th hole, the winner of which the captain announced in his usual gracious manner as he handed the prize to this reporter, George Carr - well done me!

Many congratulations and thanks are due to John and Bev Rockey for a very happy day and the competitions committee, also, and not forgetting the competitors for all the funds for good works raised on the day.
