Sidmouth BC had been selected by Bowls Devon to host the Presidents Match against Warwickshire vice presidents who were touring the South West last week, writes Ron Cook.

A rink was invited from the club who contributed to the presidents overall result with a 24-17 win.

President Trevor A Pritchard formally handed over the rink for play to the county president Edgar Melluish.

Members played at Ottery St Mary the same day and recorded a remarkable win 77-70 success entirely due to a huge winning score 30-7 by Maurie Ervine, Dennis Moore, Ron Denning and newly county badged skip Jill Bishop.

Our match against Grange was a tough challenge as our visitors fielded a number of county and national players. Sidmouth’s only winning rink was that of Rob Wheaton, Derek Mountford, Chris Hamer and skip Ron Cook 14-12. Trailing for 15 ends the team edged their opponents by scoring on the last three ends.

Great news in the Exeter Over-60s League for the Sidmouth B squad as they scored another six points to take the league leaders position with two games to play.

Sadly our C squad continue to struggle in their league and will be relegated next year to the seventh division. The A squad failed to score points this week and face a decisive match next week against Culm Vale A to ensure they remain in the first division.

In the semi-finals of the 2-wood singles’ Norman Brimson was edged out by Chas Coates. Coates raced away to establish a 15-6 lead which Brimson reduced to 15-14 having dominated the second half on short jacks only to lose the jack on the penultimate end.
