Two young Sidvale SC swimmers came back from the Devon County Championships in Plymouth with medals They competed with hundreds of other swimmers from huge swimming clubs like, for example, Kelly College, Plymouth Leander and Exeter City. Rachel Cavin, 9, a pupil at Sidbury School, and Jonathan Surtees, 9, a pupil at St Nicholas School, amazed supporters by coming home with commendable honours.Rachel won a gold in the 200m breaststroke, was disqualified after finishing third in the 100m final (her breaststroke leg kick was out of alignment) and came fourth in the 200m backstroke final.Jonathan won a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke and also bagged two fourths, in the 100m individual medley and 200m backstroke. The pair had to travel down to Plymouth on both Saturday and Sunday and spent all of both days at the pool. But the long waits between races, due to the sheer number of competitors, was eased by the fact that Tom Daly was practising in the dive pool adjacent to the competition!Rachel also competed in a heat with a 22-year-old Paralympic swimmer.
