CLYST Hydon underlined their growing indoor cricket credentials by hitting a tournament best 189-2 against Ottery St Mary in the East Devon League.
The one failure in their batting line-up was Clint Holmes, who made one, but all the rest made at least the retirement score of 25.
Ian Sutton led the way with 53 and Simon Holmes was the only other success for Ottery’s bowlers when he was caught by L Biggs off Duncan Bradshaw-Smith for 37.
Chris Jelley reached 36 and Graham Trude 29 on their returns to the pitch. Lewis Bowen had only one visit, but struck 25 in eight balls.
Ottery’s reply was in disarray at 30-4 after six overs, but Steve Loud, with 30, and then Bradshaw-Smith, with a stubborn 13 not out, got the total up to 81 when the overs ran out.
Needing only 82 to beat Newton St Cyres, Honiton had lost both openers for ducks in the first over of their reply.
Wickets continued to tumble, but J Holmes kept a cool head to reach 43 not out and steer his side to a one-wicket win.
Exmouth posted 125 against Yarcombe & Stockland to win by 22 runs. Mainstays of the winning total were S Cross ad James Tapper with 41 not out and 29, respectively.
L Bowen made 30 not out but, with Richard Arnold taking three cheap wickets, Yarcombe were held to 103-4.
Clyst Hydon II made hard work of bettering the 89 all out made by Tipton St John, eventually wining by one wicket with five balls to spare. The main contributors to Tipton’s total were C O’Higgins with 27 and Dickie Dawson with 20. They were two of the three run-outs that restricted the scoring.
Clyst Hydon were grateful to L Morgan making an unbeaten 28 to pilot them home.
