Tipton St John beat the weather, but get beaten by Cardiff-based touring side

In a match sponsored by the Kings Arms, Otterton, Tipton were lucky to play Cardiff tourists Mitres as a glorious summer’s day was sandwiched between two very rainy ones in which Sunday’s match against the Met Office was cancelled, writes Phil Wright.
Mitres batted first and although Tipton made occasional inroads into their batting line-up, they could not dislodge opener David Elias who made 111.
The wickets were shared by the Tipton bowlers, with Alex Tubbs and Mark Channon both getting 1-39 and Phil Wright and Tom Whittington 1-22 and 1-24 respectively. David Jessop (2-38) and David O’Higgins (2-50) mopped up the tail.
In the field, David Jessop took two fine catches in the deep and keeper Dickie Dawson went one better with a catch, stumping and a run out after chasing a ball to square leg.
A strong Mitres team scored 235-9, a score which Tipton could not threaten. Although Steve Walker scored 70, he received little support until Tom Whittington weighed in with 17 not out.
Three Tipton players managed to get out first ball and the team was eventually dismissed for 144, losing by 91 runs.
