After a terrific innings from Ottery opener Anthony Dean had boosted his side to a highly competitive total, fine bowling spells from teenagers Sam Brook and John Button skittled visiting Feniton to hand the Salston Field side a crushing victory, writes Ian Townsend.

Dean and Tom Peters (17) gave the Otters a solid 40-run start before the latter was bowled by Andy Rose. Henry Mutter (30) joined Dean to add a further 60 before edging Kevin Brandon behind, but the scoreboard kept moving as Frank Hartley struck a rapid twenty and Dean began to unfurl some delightful shots to reach 92 (13 fours) before being bowled by Brandon. Having struck a useful late innings 37 (six fours), Richard Kitzinger edged behind to become a third victim for the persistent Brandon (3-57) but the debutant Otters’ skipper must have been well satisfied with a total of 236-6.

Brook (4-29) plunged the Feniton reply into disarray by claiming a wicket in each of his first four overs! George Primsall (0), Matt Kingdon (6) and Andy Rose (0) were all bowled after which Tom Plance (7) was caught by Peters. Forty seven runs were added in eight overs before Button claimed two scalps by having Stuart Bright (13) caught and bowling Steve Lawler (12) and when Tom Gurney (7) was then bowled by Mutter, at 53-7, the visitors’ goose was well and truly cooked. Jack Tucker put up brave late resistance as he blasted a rapid 45 comprised almost wholly of boundaries (11 fours), but when he was caught off Jack Ellison, Feniton were all out for 131 handing Kitzinger’s boys a 105 run triumph.

Ottery St Mary 3rd XI 236-6 (A Dean 92, R Kitzinger 37, H Mutter 30, F Hartley 20, K Brandon 3-57) Feniton 131 (J Tucker 45, S Brook 4-29, J Button 3-17). Ottery St Mary (20pts) bt Feniton (5pts) by 105 runs.
