Smoothhounds feature again in anglers’ catches this week with Ethan Hammond landing a 10lb fish and Andy Webb, fishing Cogden on Chesil beach using peeler crab on a pulley pennel rig, landing his first one during a night session.
Kev Madeley fished one of our estuaries in search of the Gilthead Bream that seem to be around in quite good numbers this year and managed to find a few eager to take his baits.
Tony white changed from his usual Bass fishing this week and using bread went in search of Mullet in the river Dart at Totnes, his best fish of the session weighing in at over 3lbs. Harley Heyward fished a rock mark in the south Hams with Rays as his target species, his reward being a Small Eyed Ray of 12lbs 10oz.
Charter boats are still reporting plenty of Pollack and some Cod showing on the wrecks. Lewis Hodder took his boat Pegasus from Lyme Regis to Dartmouth for a three-day trip, and his anglers found plenty of Plaice and Gurnard on the banks with the wreck producing Bass and some huge Scad.
At last, some Bream are being caught from Beer with Archie Pike and his boat Orca finding plenty for anglers this week, and Ben Male also landing a nice 2lb plus Couches Bream.
Successful tactics were continental style on long quiver tip rods, light fluorocarbon traces and size 6 hooks, bait being Mackerel, Squid or prawns. John Rigley landed his first Undulate Ray, estimated at about 8lbs.
I took a trip to Minehead this week fishing on Teddie Boy with the usual Rays and small Congers being caught, although I did manage a near 5lb Bass as well, this fell to a Mackerel strip on a running ledger rig.
Some of Honiton SAC members took a trip to Penzance this week with a good mixture of species being caught, the most notable a Megrim of 1lb 11oz falling to the rod of Judd lasselles.
Newbarn Angling centre regular Bob Wooster got amongst the Carp this week with 25lb plus Mirror caught on a floating dog biscuit. Oakley Hunt fished an all-night session putting 15 Carp on the bank with weight ranging from 15lbs to the mid-twenties.
