Golfers enjoy captain’s day

Captain’s Day 2010 and Nick Bater decided to run a four ball better ball with full handicap.

This benefits the higher handicap as in a 3/4 hcp, they lose more shots and this proved to be the case with the winning pair of Moray Boscence and Glen Channing who were off 21 and 27 hcp.

They managed to amass a huge score of 53 points, three clear of second placed Brian Margison and Steve Miles.

Even the ladies decided to get in on this high scoring act and, with 45 points, Pat Coleman and Jaqui Hills must have been thinking they had won but, again with a three point margin, Liz Chance and Angela Coles came in with 48.

The Captain gave thanks to all who had helped him to prepare the day. He thanked the greens, bar & catering Staff for their efforts, and Chris and Kevin in the Pro shop.

After the prize giving there was an auction and Stuart George Coles helped raise 211 for Nick Bater’s Charity, The C Group, on Saturday night.

“A Night Out With Stuart George Coles” was snapped up by David Bater for 10, and “A Night In With Stuart George Coles” was snapped up by his mother for 1, allowing Richard Bowden to go to the Blue Ball for a few beers in peace!

Stuart George Coles also generously paid 200 for green fees at East Devon and Royal North Devon.

l James Pickard showed why the County Captain has selected him for the second team this weekend.

His five under par round for 41 points in this week’s Monday Stableford kindly sponsored by www.lastminuteteetimes.co.uk, was almost effortless, and could have been better.

Despite being one over par after four holes, a run of five straight birdies from the seventh set him up for a very impressive score.

Pickard is now the lowest handicaped player at Sidmouth GC, a title long held by Damion Gee.

It was another week of ‘what if’ from the Seniors as Dennis Gillson scored 45 points but failed to enter the club competition, so first place went to Pickard.

Also benefiting from this was Jack Hodge and the in-form Glenn Channing.

In the Seniors’ section Gillson blew away the field with a eight-point win, beating Brian Cole.
