Sidmouth 2nd XV were emphatic 80-5 winners when they made the short trip to Withycombe 2nds.

It was another commanding all-round performance from the Quins following on from recent successes at Honiton and at home to South Molton.

Sidmouth made a strong start, showing plenty of pace and guile in the backs, which meant they quickly had the hosts on the back foot.

Early pressure led to flanker Matt James crossing for the first of what would be a 14-try haul for the visitors.

Skipper Giles Dixon, leading from the front, scored a brace of unconverted tries in quick succession before fly half Will Dunford dummied his way through to touch down under the posts and he got up to convert his own try.

Early injuries caused disruption to both sides with Withycombe suffering in the backs and Sidmouth in the forwards, losing two. It certainly disrupted the Sidmouth cause as they only had backs on the bench. Withy, to their credit, continued to battle well, but the next Sidmouth try came when a long pass was cut out by winger Mark Oke and he showed a clean set of heels to dart over in the corner.

Centre Jake Watts rounded off the first half with another well-worked unconverted try and Sidmouth trooped off at the break with a 32-0 lead.

It was a former Sidmouth player – winger Ben West – who set up what proved to be the only score of the game for the hosts when he made a 50-metre run up field before off-loading for a colleague to score under the posts.

Sidmouth were soon back on the front foot and Dixon completed his hat-trick of tries before second tries were scored by Jake Watts, Mark Oke and Arron Down.

Johnny Hamill got in on the act, joining the line from full-back, making the extra man to score wide out, but it was young legs that had the final say with hooker Luke Dix showing exceptional fitness to outpace the Withy defence to score a brace of similar tries late on – both with 40-metre sprints to the line.

Tom Robbins, after some kicking practice, got his eye in to convert the final four tries, one of the conversions being slotted from the touch line.
