The weather seemed to be toying with those looking at the prospect of sailing on Saturday with some light rain and no wind as we approached midday, writes Simon White.

However, the clouds broke and an easterly breeze picked up, as did the spirits of those wanting to get out on the water. As the boats launched from the beach the wind had picked up to a steady 14 knots with gusts at 21 knots.

The strength of the increasing wind speed proved to be an early season test of skill as the conditions became more difficult even with a fairly choppy sea.

The scorpion fleet saw Nick Jennings and crew Jo Kinder out for the first time, going head to head with Simon Price with his stand-in crew for the day, Tim Vause.

Both races were won by Nick and Jo, which was made easier in the first race following a capsize by Simon and Tim.

The Laser fleet saw Bob Vine win both races.

Paul Wilson had to retire from the first race with broken rigging but having returned to shore started the second race with some temporary repairs, coming in in a thoroughly deserved second place.

The handicap fleet saw Mark and Matthew Collett in the RS200 take the honours in both races with Barny Croft and Rachel Flewitt in the RS2000 taking both second places. Patrol boat crews were Mark Wearing, Nigel Palmer, James Francis and Dave Clarke.

Following on from the sailing, the club held an Italian themed evening where a three course sit-down meal was provided. This was well attended by 50 members and friends who enjoyed an evening of good wine, food and company.

Anyone wishing to become involved in the sailing club can obtain further details at http://www.sidmouthsailing.org.uk or can call into the club on a Saturday or Wednesday evening. New members are always made very welcome.
