Sidmouth Quins recorded a fine win in their Merit Table fixture against Newton Abbot at the Blackmore. Within the first 10 minutes the Quins had rattled up two tries, giving rise to thoughts of an English cricket score, or more, though after this the visitors' defence did tighten up. Left wing James Leat made inroads into the Newton half and quick ball from the forwards allowed full back Sam Cummins to exploit the space to score, Glenn Channing adding the conversion. A sweeping move from deep in the Sidmouth half saw centre Giles Dixon make the final yards to go over for an unconverted try.For a while neither side was able to breach solid defences, Keith Upham and Giles Dixon standing firm in the centre. A raking kick down field from Glenn Channing put the Quins five metres from the Newton line and hooker Liam O'Connor was on hand to drive over for another unconverted try. With half time looming, Glenn Channing took the direct route to score from a half chance, going in under the posts, taking several defender with him. He then added the extras. Straight from the restart Newton caught Sidmouth napping and scored an unconverted try in the corner.Newton started the second half with renewed vigour and within a few minutes their fullback had scored an unconverted try.The Quins regained composure, getting some pattern back into their play, and probing runs from scrum half Hamish Martin paid off, creating openings out wide, which resulted in a try for Glenn Channing which he converted.After this Newton were always going to be chasing the game but managed a rumble over for a try at the close.Neil Barratt, Liam O'Connor and Clancy Carpenter, all playing out of their normal comfort zone, made the victory even more satisfying.
