The East Budleigh Club president, professional player GM Keith Arkell, triumphed in the Paignton Premier with a score of 6.5 out of 7, writes Brian Gosling.
Keith has won this event so many times in the past that one loses count. Club secretary Brian Gosling came third in the Boniface morning event.
This is named after a much-respected arbiter Steve Boniface, who passed away some years ago and had roots in this part of the world. The club for the coming season has decided to enter teams in the Devon County Chess Association’s Division Three (Schofield) and in the Peter Rooke Knockout tournament.
It will also have a team in the Exeter League, Championship Division. See Keverelchess.com and Chessdevon.org.uk websites for more local chess news and entry forms for tournaments.
The World Champion Magnus Carsen defends his world title in a match against the American Fabiano Caruana in November in London. This should be worth following. In July, the British Chess Championships are coming back to the Riviera Centre, Torquay after a period of six years. East Budleigh Chess Club (EBCC) meets on the second Thursday of every month. The next meeting is on Thursday, October 11, at 6.50pm, taking place, as ever, at the All Saints Church Hall. For more information on all things EBCC, contact Brian Gosling by email at brigosling@aol.com or by phone at 01395 442060.
