Saturday saw the first leg of the match between the Emerton Court team (the Over-60s) and the B team – the fixture has also been described as the ‘incontinents’ against the ‘incompetents’, writes Jonathan Lee.

It is named the Ken Titherington Trophy after a much loved member lost to us all too soon. As usual, the two captains went out first. The format is match play, off three quarters handicap, best score to count each hole.

A good spirited battle saw the B team captain and Steve Milton prevail two-and-one (two holes up with one to play). This lead was immediately lost by club captain John Barnard playing with Bob Andrews, the pair suffering a four-and-three defeat to Lester Willmington and former captain, Nick Bater.

The Emerton Court Team then began to build a solid lead and, after five matches, were leading 4-1.

The B team tail then began to wag and the gap was closed, but ultimately the Emerton Court Team were successful, securing a five-and-a-half to four-and-a-half success.

The second leg is held in the Autumn and the closeness of this result means it is all to play for.
