Top class ponies were in action at Bratton Down where two pony races preceded the main Dulverton West Point to point card, writes Lee Glanville.

The 138 race saw Angelic (Tyler Heard) triumph over Welsh visitor Penway Tap Dance (Lorcan Williams) when long time leaders Williams and Tamby Welch on Bronze Lawrence took a slightly wider line round the home bend.

Heard was sat patiently in behind the two pacesetters but grabbed his opportunity to take the lead when a gap opened up, and he held on up the final hill to win by a neck from Williams.

This race was also a qualifier for the national novice finals and first season rider James Armstrong (My Golden Dream) took the ticket with his fifth place here.

The 148 race was a tactical and long distance affair the riders taking on a 1m 3.5f course at Bratton for the first time .

It took them three and a half minutes (the later point to point races taking about 6 min 10 secs for a circuit further.)

The field were bunched together for most of the race but drove for home two furlongs out.

Tarka (Tina Smith) led til close home with Calypso (Harry Cobden) poised in behind, when they were overhauled by Vadlawalkover whose jockey Hannah Welch had been working hard from a long way out.

Cobden took second with Tarka third.

The next pony racing is at the South Tetcott meeting at Upcott Cross on Bank Holiday Monday.
