MARY King finished fourth and was best of the Brits at Aachen in a team event in Germany last weekend. Mary finished fourth on Imperial Cavalier and was delighted that the horse is fulfilling his potential. She also picked up a team silver award, the gold going to the host country's side, whose individual riders occupied the first three placings. The performance will have done her no harm at all in the eyes of the selectors, who will shortly be picking the team riders for the forthcoming European championships. She said: "Imperial Cavalier performed his best dressage test so far and, although he had a pole down in the showjumping, he had a great clear cross country. He just feels like it is all coming together and I am sure there are some big wins ahead for him." This weekend she is competing at Barbury Horse Trials with novice horses King Albert and King Joules but also on Apache Sauce in the CIC*** - the horse's first outing since Badminton, and Fern Hill Urco in the CIC 2**. The following week she is at Aston Le Walls on Friday and Saturday and Nutwell Court on Sunday. At the latter event she is likely to be partnering daughter Emily's two horses, as Emily is still recovering from a fall. The competition for this weekend's prestigious Barbury International CIC*** is likely to be very hot. Mary said that there are 150 horses in the CIC *** section along. Medallists at Olympic, World and European level, including Britain's Olympic Bronze Medal quintet of Mary, William Fox-Pitt, Sharon Hunt, Daisy Dick and Kristina Cook are all entered in the event's showcase class worth £4000 to the winner, along with riders from a further nine countries. The competition encompasses some seven classes across the levels.
