Last Saturday Exeter City saw their one-hundred per cent home record come to an end when they succumbed to a 2 - 0 defeat against league two new boys Newport County, writes Richard Tuson.

It was the first meeting, between the clubs, since New Years day 1988, and the first at St James Park since a Sherpa Van Trophy game, in November 1987 and it was almost like a reminder of the 80’s when the 864 travelling supporters were matched by a similar police presence!

The match statistics must make the Exeter kindred annoyed, 50/50 possession, 16 shots at goal for Exeter compared to 11 from Newport, six on target for the home team against four from the away side.

However, the main stats’ are that goals; the first from Conor Washington on 23 minute and the second from Harley Worley on 70 minutes.

Perhaps it was a bit of karma after Exeter’s ‘smash and grab’ away win at Northampton, the week before. The result saw City slip five places, in league two, down to 9th.

Newport manager, former Spurs defender Justin Edinburgh, said in an interview after the game: “That was ever so pleasing, we hadn’t won since August 17. I think we really had to earn our win against a very good Exeter side”.

On Saturday City are again on their travels with a visit to Fleetwood and next Saturday (October 5) it’s the Devon derby against Plymouth Argyle at St James Park with the match kicking-off at 1pm.

Up the City!
