SIDMOUTH Town are playing for survival in Premier in their final match of the season tomorrow. They face league leaders St Martin's who can win the division depending on the result of the Feniton v Topsham match. Sidmouth need to beat St Martin's and Feniton to beat Topsham to stay up. And they stand a chance. They have 'come of age' according to boss Paul Ashford who witnessed them beat Wellington Town 2-0 midweek after going down just 2-1 to St Martin's last weekend. Chris Duchenski was back available for the Wellington game and he boosted the side. Ben Cole put Sidmouth 1-0 up despite Wellington controlling the game with some great footballing skills. "We were up for it. We can beat anyone in the league on a nice sunny evening with all the players available but this competition is a season long," said Ashford, who is wishing he had been in charge of the side from August."We need to do that week in week out and the lads need to realise that without that commitment we won't be the best." Dave Green, who much to his frustration had been on the subs' bench for the first half of the Wellington game, came off it to show his worth and Duchenski scored the second goal. Luke Ashford in goal displayed a dependable pair of hands, and Cole and Steve Williams also shone.A penalty had been the difference between Sidmouth and St Martin's on Saturday, the spot kick putting the leaders 1-0 up. Sidmouth had their chances but St Martin's managed to turn a defender and go 2-0 up before Dave Green, 16, pulled a goal back. "I was disappointed with the penalty, but we worked really hard. We gave them a run for their money and created chances," Ashford said. l Sidmouth Reserves' miserable season continued when they lost 4-2 to Dawlish Town on Saturday. They face next season in Senior 3.
