Past winners (1960) Bob Webber and Martyn White produced a magnificent round of golf, nine 3s, seven 4s and a pair of 6s, to claim a clear victory in the latest round of the club's most prestigious winter competition, The Streatham Trophy. Spencer Jarrett, recently returned to the game after a break of many years, was joined by Jay Thorne, his colleague at club sponsors, Harrison-Lavers and Potburys, to take second place. With White and Webber having started poorly in the event, Jarrett and Thorne now share the lead in the overall standings with the surprise package of club captain, Paddy Tallon, and the experienced Mark Thomas, still recovering from a recent run of heavy defeats. With last week's leaders now out of the frame, as one of the duo suffered a nasty leg injury that will probably rule him out for most of the golfing year, Jay and Spencer are now level at the top the table with Mark Thomas and Paddy Tallon, both pairs on 113 points with one more event left before the final. Result: 1, Bob Webber and Martyn White 42pts; 2, Spencer Jarrett and Jay Thorne 39pts; 3, Gary Adam and Tony Bickel 37pts.l It now seems we are coming out of the winter with the clocks going forward on March 29 and the first Monday Stableford due to take place the day after. I have also heard that this summer is going to be a hot one, but please don't hold me to this as I would not like to be responsible for false information. If you have not been up to Sidmouth recently why not dust off the clubs and pay us a visit? With green fees on Sunday from 10 you can't really go wrong.l NINE juniors attended training on Sunday and they were shown etiquette and rules when playing the main course. With so many juniors now taking advantage of free Sunday Tiger coaching, once they join the club it is important that they learn how to behave when playing the course away from adult supervision. The session was finished off as usual with a few fun golf games where various small prizes were on offer. The Rose Bowl winner was Jane Painter with Sue Pyne second.
