Fluxton 3, Newton St Cyres 3 The confused autumn weather was a fitting backdrop for this chaotic clash, writes Olly Paget.

Fluxton twice came from behind, then deservedly took the lead before being pegged back 15 minutes from time.

St Cyres were more organised early on and their first attack resulted in a scrappy goal headed from close range. Fluxton composed themselves with Ferrett and Hughes leading the way with neat exchanges. Indeed, Fluxton’s equaliser came from a smart midfield move that culminated with a cross from the left flank being cleared only so far as the lurking Ferrett, whose well struck shot deflected beyond the ‘keepers reach.

Before long, St Cyres were back in front with a well taken finish after the ball fell straight to their striker’s feet from a last ditch Fluxton challenge.

However, this Fluxton team clearly had goals in them, and the next came in stunning fashion when Wilson smashed the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the box. Before the break Fluxton hit the crossbar and had three headed attempts cleared off the line; the tide had turned, but the scoreline was equal.

The second half came and neither team managed to settle into a rhythm, but the seemingly untroubled Fluxton defence breathed confidence into the rest of the team to push on for a winner. They eventually went ahead when Man of the Match Ferrett produced a stunning volley from 25-yards which sent the ball bulleting to the back of the net.

However, St Cyres simply refused to lie down and managed to get in behind Fluxton’s backline to swing over a cross that was met by a firm far post header.

With the score line once again tied, Fluxton enjoyed the majority of possession, huffing and puffing, but not quite blowing the house down. While the Flux felt deserving of the three points, they were left thanking Matt Sercombe for preserving the draw with his backward-leaping-mid-air-twisting save that turned a looping strike just over the crossbar.

Tomorrow (Saturday) brings a local derby as Fluxton look to send Ottery St Mary back up the river with no paddle.
