Fluxton end season with nine-goal success

Fluxton 9, Open Space International 0
Fluxton’s final day in the sun, blue skies, a warm sou’wester, buds and blossom on all sides, a friendly referee and a smattering of supporters at this most bucolic of sports grounds, upon which Fluxton have never dropped a point, writes Alex Paget.
Open Space, the Ronseal of Devon football, afforded Fluxton all the acreage they could possibly desire and it wasn’t long before the correct current tally became the most popular on-field discussion.
Two up after five minutes, there was a danger the game might degenerate into selfishness and lethargy, but Fluxton kept passing and running for 90 minutes and scored almost as many goals as they deserved.
Tom Rapps opened the scoring with a trademark first time swish from 12-yards. (It’s a wonder he missed four out of four from the spot before being relieved of the duty midway through the season).
Once the lid was off, the goals kept pouring out. Ali Buchan (3), a second for Rapps, James Santer, Alex Paget, an own goal and a first goal of the season for goal un-shy defender Will Boyd, all contributed to test the adequacy of the ref’s stationary.
At the other end of the pitch, yet another incarnation of the defence was always comfortable and stylish, led by the returning Jonny West.
He pushed Buchan to the wire for the Man of the Match vote.
Fluxton will finish first or, more likely, second and will be promoted.
The squad evolved over the course of the season and everyone who signed played in the spirit intended when the club was founded.
Fluxton scored 99 goals in 28 league and cup matches and will be back next season looking for more success.
