Following his team’s 10-0 Macron League Division Three win at North Tawton, Ottery St Mary boss Dave Fairweather was plotting a route to seeing his side take their winning run towards the double figure mark by the end of the year!

Always one to ‘keep his feet on the ground’ and ever keen for his team to ‘take each game as it comes’, there’s no escaping the fact that between now and the start of next year, the Otters have four league games which are eminently ‘winnable’ and, if successful, it would mean a nine game winning run for the Otters to take into 2019!

Goals from Jordan Wilkinson (3), Dan Welch (2), Curtis Winchcombe (2), Dan Jewell, Tom Purdy and Adam Harris saw the Otters to a fifth successive win.

Fairweather said: “It was certainly a ‘good day at the office’ for us as, not only did we score lots of goals, but we managed to keep our first clean sheet of the season - happy days all round.”

We must give credit to North Tawton, for they are clearly suffering having lost their manager in the summer and a number of players. They battled well and their goalkeeper had a fine game. That said, we certainly missed a hatful of chances on top of the 10 we did score!”

One strange statistic to come out of such a big win was that leading scorer Corey Ringer was not amongst the goals!

The Ottery boss said: “He [Corey Ringer] led the line well and, while he did not score, he played his part as the target man.”

Looking ahead, Ottery, who host Budleigh Salterton Reserves tomorrow (Saturday), have a week off the following Saturday and then play three times in December and all four games are against sides below them in the table. Indeed, after the Budleigh home game they face Budleigh away on December 8, before hosting Newton St Cyres on December 15 - Ottery beat them 6-1 in this season’s first meeting - and then they wrap up the year’s league action with a December 22 Washbrook Meadow home game against a Tedburn St Mary side they beat 4-3 earlier in the campaign and so there is every chance that the Otters’ current five match winning run will be one of nine straight wins by the time 2019 arrives!

However, the Ottery boss is not happy looking any further than the next game and says: “Let’s not get carried away. We need to take each game as it comes. It is imperative to our long-term planning that we finish in the top three this season and, given how we are currently performing, you have to say things are going very well.

“But, take the next game and the meeting with Budleigh. They have no first team game this weekend so we can take nothing for granted and need to be focussed to ensure that we do what we can to bank another three points.”

l There’s no action this weekend for the Ottery ladies, who went down to a heavy defeat at the hands of Premier Division high-fliers Halwill last weekend.
