Sidmouth Town Reserves went out of the Firewatch Devon senior Cup, beaten 2-1 at Ashburton.
Despite having plenty of possession, the Vikings were unable to fashion suitable quality to unlock a solid host’s defence.
In what was generally an all-round below-par show, Town were the masters of their own downfall as they shipped two bad goals in the first period.
Art the break changes were made and there was sufficient improvement in the second half for Town to get on the score sheet and indeed get back into the contest when Alex Martin applied a smart finish to an eat move.
Sadly though it was not enough to force the game into an extra half-hour and the Vikings tumbled out of the County Cup.
Manager Nick Ogden said: “Hand on heart I am not too despondent at being knocked out. That said I was not overly impressed by the performance and we have to show signs of improvement and indeed be able to mix our game up a bit more. Some players are doing it but others fell way short of what we know they can do, as yet we haven’t had our best 11 out for various reasons but that’s no excuse because the players we are using are more than capable, they really must start having more belief in themselves”.
Anthony Griffiths was the Vikings man of the Match. The side will have a little more time to lick their wounds before their next outing as this Saturday they are without a game.
