Sidmouth Warriors made Exeter and Youth League Under-10 KO Cup progress with a penalty shoot-out success over Heavitree Titans.
The Exeter side took the lead with an early goal from a free-kick. Warriors were slow to get into their usual rhythm, but they began to create chances only to find the Heavies goalkeeper in fine form.
Warriors made a bright start to the second half with Dev Nair and Tom Cload adding a bit of determination and gradually the pressure built before the Warriors enterprise was rewarded when Toby Edmonds rose majestically to head home a corner and take the tie top extra-time.
In extra-time the closest either side came to winning the tie was when a Jamie Pitter effort cannoned back off the bar!
The game ended all square and so was decided by a penalty shoot-out!
Both sides tucked away their first spot kicks, but the Heavies second was well saved by Anthony Nita and Pitter slotted the final penalty to see Warriors into the second round.
The Warriors Man of the Match award was never in doubt with the players and coaches all agreeing that Anthony Nita deserved the accolade after a fine game between the sticks.
Warriors coach Chris Elsom said: “Perhaps the burden of being cup holders wore heavily on the teams shoulders for their certainly looked nervous, especially in the early stages. However, it all came right at the end.”
