Ottery St Mary 1, West Hill Wasps 8
The two Under-11 Division Three teams served up a superb midweek evening derby encounter.
The opening exchanges were played very much in the middle third of the pitch and the West Hill back line of Louis Robertson-Moro, Bailey Wallace and Tom Simmons were rarely troubled.
Jonathan Pitcher opened the scoring for the Wasps from close range following blocked efforts by Benson and Pugsley. Charlie Pullen doubled the lead with a smart finish after good approach play involving Pitcher and Benson.
On a very small pitch the long throw of Tom Simmons proved a real asset for Wasps and the third goal arrived from one such move when Ben Marsh rose well to head home. Another Simmons throw ended with Pullen scoring his second to make it four.
Joseph Green fired home through a crowded penalty area after a Benson corner to make it 5-0 and the first half scoring was completed by Marsh with a cracking right foot drive from just outside the area to send Wasps into the break 6-0 to the good.
Ottery fought back well in the second half. Euan Webber and Will Amos had to be sharp on numerous occasions to repel Ottery attacks.
James Horler and Joseph Green worked hard to win possession in midfield and another huge throw from Simmons saw Marsh head home his hat-trick goal.
Ottery broke down the right and a good pass split the Wasps defence where Robin Allen finished coolly to make the score 7-1.
The goal of the match came late on when Bailey Wallace swivelled and fired a left foot shot from distance which arrowed it’s way into the net off the underside of the cross bar.
Bailey Wallace was awarded the Wasps’ Man of the Match award for his dominant performance in the air and that stunning late strike.
