After several aborted attempts to start the 2008 sailing season due to the unfavourable weather conditions, it finally got going last Wednesday. Four Scorpions, five Lasers, two Toppers and a Laser Two bravely took to the water and encountered somewhat of a shock to the system with the water temperature. In a force 3 south westerly wind and moderate sea the cobwebs were soon blown away and some close racing ensued. Oliver Salter and Heather Martin led from the start in the Scorpions but were overtaken on the last leg by Chris Clapp and Erin Pyle-Gray following a navigational error. Bob Vine took the Laser honours and I understand Alice Rea the Toppers. Regular sailing will now continue and this weekend Sidmouth entertain visiting Scorpions from country-wide to compete in the open event.
