Sidmouth took to the Blackmore on a perfect afternoon in the unfamiliar maroon strip looking ready for a match whereas Withycombe arrived late in dribs and drabs. That set the tone for the game although Sidmouth made it hard work. In under two minutes Matt Gingell at fullback made a break up the stand side wing and passed out to Will Finch to score a simple try. Nick Gingell converted. Then, with forwards dominating, debutant Colt hooker Olly Derryman found a gap to touch down under the posts again. Gingell N added two points to make it 14-0 in five minutes. The visitors came to life and prevented the Sidmouth backs getting the ball and only a try by Andrew Eustace just before the half hour added to the tally plus, of course, two points from the unerring boot of Gingell. The half time talk of tactics to use the far superior three quarters did little to prevent individuals trying to win the game on their own until the ball was finally moved along the line to Gingell M on the overlap again. His brother converted the try. Ben H, another Colt, then made his senior debut and Jon Gardener had a run out after returning from injury. Sidmouth again conspired to make hard work of it and gave away in excess of seven penalties - and knocked the ball on with a couple of clear scoring opportunities. With ten minutes remaining and, from a rare home team penalty, scrum half Martin Ford scored following a forward drive. Gingell completed his total with the conversion. The match was then cut short following an injury to a Withycombe player that needed medical attention.Although the score showed it was a convincing win, a team effort could and should easily have shown a half century victory. Perhaps this is testament to the ever-changing team personnel.
