Sidmouth and Ottery Hockey Club (SOHC) men’s 2nd XI lost 3-1 at Sidmouth to visiting East Devon II.

The home side began well and enjoyed large periods of early control when they dictated much of the play.

However, when East Devon had the ball going forward they clearly posed a threat. The first opportunities to score fell to the home side, but they were unable to convert a number of short corners. The visitors were lively, but their best efforts were thwarted by SOHC goalkeeper John Newman.

With what proved to be the final play of the first half, Gabe Cortinhas went close with arguably the best chance the home side fashioned in the half.

The second half saw a different East Devon approach for they had more intensity about their game and began to threaten. Indeed, as the pressure built, so SOHC were caught out when, from a short corner, John Dutton stopped the ball on then line with his foot and, fro the resultant penalty flick, the home side took the lead. They scored a second, in similar fashion, but SOHC were always ‘in the game’ and did pose a threat throughout the second half. However, they were caught on the counter attack and fell 3-0 down. SOHC, to their credit, continued to look to get something out of the game and their endeavours were rewarded when Eddie Rudolph put away a penalty flick awarded when Treeve Harris was felled by the home goalkeeper.

It was SOHC goalkeeper John Newman who was named the home Player of the Match. It’s five wins and five defeats for the 2nd XI now this league season so far and they have a great chance of making that six wins in 11 games tomorrow (Saturday) when they visit second bottom ISCA D with the game at Exeter University getting underway at 1.30pm.
