PaDDY Maher, 67, from Ottery St Mary, has just added a European Cup gold medal to his GB Masters hockey tally.

Maher, who plays goalkeeper for Ottery Crickets,, has been a regular with the England Masters team, and earned this most recent gold in the O60 European championships in Dusseldorf, Germany.

He said: “It was great, as the whole GB hockey squad was out there from U21 level up. The U35s were playing in their equivalent competition in Monchengladbach which was only 20 minutes away so they came and watched us and we went to watch them. The coaches, physios, doctors etc are the same for the whole squad and they don’t make any allowances for our great age!

Maher has only conceded four goals in his last 14 internationals and next year, starts the trials process for the Masters World Cup, which will be played between the Olympics and Paralympics in Oxford next year. Maher now holds World gold, European gold and European Trophy silver medals.
