August saw the culmination of a season's cricket for Ottery's under-15s with the league cup finals day and the last two games of their league campaign.

In the cup, despite a strong performance in the semi-final when Ottery beat Kentisbeare, they came up short against Topsham in the final who deserved their victory.

The semi saw Ottery rattle up 158-1 against Kentisbeare with George Biggs and Nick Mansfield putting on an opening stand of 106 before Biggs retired with 51. Mansfield batted the full 20 overs but was bowled on the last ball of the allotment for an anchoring 47.

Al Thurgate smashed 42 not out in the last five overs.

Kentisbeare replied with 70-8 in their 20 overs with wickets being shared between Tubbs (3-12) Buckland (1-8) and Fane-Trefusis (1-13)

Ottery's best moment in the final was a wicket for Alex Tubbs as they lost by nine wickets.

Back in the league, things have gone slightly better with a good win against Thorverton on Tuesday of last week. Thorverton had not accounted for the wrist spin of Sam Loud, who reduced the Thors to 0-3 after his first over by bowling Eggleton, trapping Choules second ball and had Lyne stumped by Louis Biggs on the last ball of his over.

Thorverton limped to 52-9 off of their 20 overs with 13 coming from Gibbons and an impressive Harry Choules.

Ottery made fairly light work of the total with Nick Feeney blasting 28 and George Biggs' patient 10 not out.

Ottery's final game of the league season was against Heathcoat at Knightshayes. Heathcoat didn't start well as their Devon player, Penberthy, was run out in the first over. They recovered despite also losing Watson to the vastly improved bowling of John Buckland.

Edge and Hawkes put on a good stand of 53 to lift the total past 100. Some tight bowling at the end from Tubbs limited the damage to 118-7 which was always going to be a challenging total for the Otters. Wickets were shared between Tubbs (2-10) and George Biggs (2-23).

Ottery's reply started briskly enough with Biggs and Mansfied putting on 40 in the first seven overs. Penberthy then came on and put on the brakes with some excellent flight and guile. His four overs cost only six runs and he accounted for the wicket of Biggs with a caught and bowled - Biggs going for 22.

Tubbs came in to try to pinch-hit some runs. He scored 11, but by the time he was out, Ottery needed 66 runs from eight overs. Mansfield was still there and played a sensible and patient innings.

However, with three overs to go, Ottery still needed 30 runs with the opening bowlers returning.

Mansfield departed for 47 and this left Sam Loud and Matt Reed at the crease wondering where the runs would come from. Loud suddenly found some strength and lofted Watson for seven off the first two balls of the penultimate over. Reed also hit a four in that over which left 10 needed off the final one from Hawkes.

Three deliveries saw three runs and nerves in the Ottery camp were still jangling. Reed, though, was the calmest person in Knightshayes as he lofted the fourth ball for four and then the 5th for a six.

The team and all supporters were ecstatic and this finished off not only a great season for the Otters but a thoroughly entertaining match.

Ottery now have to wait for Axminster's final match to see where the championship will be decided. Axminster need a maximum 20 points to secure the title which might not be out of the question.
