GREAT racing is in prospect on Saturday (February 28) at Bishops Court, Ottery St Mary, where the East Devon card has attracted a total of 162 entries. The Open Maiden for young horses has been divided three ways, and the Restricted is also divided, making a 10-race programme which gets under way at 11.30am.The 17 entries for the Men's Open are headed by Southwestern, who bids to repeat last year's win in this event. A repeat success also beckons for last season's Ladies' Open winner Brown Cockle, who was very unlucky when slipping up with the race won at Buckfastleigh recently. His stable companion Rimpton Boy is also amongst the entries, along with useful performers Dr Cerullo, trained for the Otters Club by Polly Gundry and Ed Walker at Ottery St Mary, and Croix de Guerre. The Exeter Racecourse Intermediate (23 entries) looks a particularly strong contest. Winning form this year is held by many horses including Brook Castle, Jack's Taxi and Jean's Joy (another Gundry/Walker trained horse).Barbury Castle winners Labarynth and Mymystery Man figure amongst the entries for the first Restricted, and Polly Gundry will look to recent winner Ivorsagoodun to follow up in the second section, where Busy Buzzard, Just Here, Kitley Hassle and Man of Leisure can prove worthy opponents. The mares Perfect Gem, trained in Sidbury by Monique Pike, and Primitive Lass should be in the shake-up in the Open Maiden for eight-year-olds plus, but the three Maidens for younger horses will take more sorting out. The Richard Barber trained Remember Bampi will have benefited from his debut third at Larkhill and should be in the frame again in the first division. The same yard has Choice Connection and Elevenses in the second section, and this pair also showed promise on their racecourse debuts. Quite A Splash ran well in a hot Larkhill Maiden and his previous experience under rules may give him the edge in the other division. The nine entries for the opening Hunt race include last year's easy winner McSolo, owned by Sue Trump. Shirley Wills' mare Benarina and the Alan Walter pair Emergence and Busy Buzzard also have winning form. This great viewing course is located half a mile south-west of Ottery St Mary, off the B3174. Entrance costs 20 per car and occupants, with a reduction to 10 for car with single driver.
