Mary King came back from her first advanced classes of the season buzzing after all her top horses exceeded expectations. In the World Cup class at Burnham Market, Mary was lying first and second after the dressage on team horse Call Again Cavalier and the up and coming star Imperial Cavalier. She said: "It was really great as there were riders from all over Europe, with top horses there. Both of mine went on to jump beautifully cross country, although I wasn't as competitive on Imperial Cavalier as I still need to get to know him better before Badminton."Cavvy went on to finish third, with a brilliant clear showjumping which impressed not only Mary but the team selectors too. Imperial Cavalier was 12th after two fences down in the showjumping and his cross country time penalties.Apache Sauce was third in the CIC three star class after a very encouraging performance and King's Temptress was in the lead after the dressage at her first attempt at Advanced level. She finished eighth overall after a steady run cross country where she powered over the more difficult fences. "I am very excited about her," Mary added. "She has a calm temperament and showed lots of scope and ability." At Portman Horse Trials midweek, King's Command had a solid Novice round but Mary had a fall with King's Rock who decided to explore all the options when faced with the first skinny fence, a very narrow arrow head. In the end he clambered over but fell, fortunately throwing Mary clear. He had another outing ths week and, after a hesitation at the first narrow fence, went on to jump three further 'skinnies' straight first time. King's Command finished sixth. l Emily King, 12, had her first taste of pre-novice competition, where she was up against the likes of Zara Phillips, and went clear cross country on both horses.
