Happy days for the U10s - junior round-up

Sidmouth U11s welcomed the Exeter Chiefs on Sunday. Unfortunately Sidmouth were caught cold and the Chiefs raced in to a five try lead in the first 20 minutes.

Sidmouth then began to show what they are capable of and battled hard to score two tries of their own.

Although ultimately losing the game 7- 3 and not helped by some disputed decisions by the referee (Sidmouth's own head coach Rob!) Sidmouth proved that when fully focused and committed they are a match for anyone in the league.

The Sidmouth try scorers were Sam Kennaugh (2) and James Emmett.

Sidmouth RFC U13s 80, Paignton 0

This was a very one-sided game. The forwards were completely dominant. The flankers, Robinson and Wright, provided quick ball and Sidmouth were never on the back foot, writes Chris Robinson.

This gave an excellent platform for the ball to be passed out to the wings. It was very gratifying to see Morgan and Hankin, who played very well today, get on the score sheet. Morgan indeed scored 2, Counsell scored four tries and could have scored more but was very unselfish. Wright scored three trademark ‘Char’ tries and even converted one! Innes-Kruger and Down at half back and Moore in the second half provided the quick ball, which allowed the backs to attack at pace and Dunn was on hand to benefit from a fine off load from Davies and scored another soon after.

Sargent and Syrrad can be intimidating for many good U13 teams and Paignton were reluctant to tackle them. Syrrad scored two tries and Sargent 1, before the coaches took pity on Paignton and took them off! The front row worked hard and were very solid. Nick, not huge, J-G’s tackle on Paignton’s biggest player best typified Sidmouth’s performance though. No mercy!

Sidmouth U 10s v Ivybridge U10s

Ivybridge arrived at Sidmouth with a strong reputation based on their close association with the South Devon college academy, strong players crossing between the two organisations, writes Craig Morgan.

In the first game Sidmouth fought hard against overwhelming power and discipline, conceding five tries, but the side never stopped battling. Sam Bond scored a second half try to keep Sidmouth’s tail up. A baptism of fire it surely was but all players deserve credit and left the field with a smile.

The second game pitted two determined sets of players and the quality of rugby wowed the spectators. Sidmouth’s performance was of such quality that it knocked Ivybridge back f. A storming Will Kennaugh try gave his team their just half time lead. The second half saw Ivybridge up the intensity and soon they levelled. The pressure told and, despite some Max Dix tackling heroics, Ivybridge scored the decider thus winning 2-1.

A performance to be proud of. Happy players, happy coaches and refs – job done !

Plymstock, v Sidmouth RFC U16

Sidmouth played well in tricky circumstance and although the result was a comfortable win the game was an excellent opportunity to test set-piece and open play drills and for players to experience playing out of position.

George Toomey had a taste at scrum half, Haydon Down at centre and Euan East, Luke Wells-Burr, Jack Faulkner, Lewis Headon and George Locke, all had spells in the back row. John Pares, Headon, Martin Welsford, Gilby and Down all also played in the Plymstock team.

Sidmouth were made to feel very welcome by the parents and players alike and what Plym tock lacked in attacking options they made-up for in outstanding spirit, support and teamwork, and they will certainly pick up more wins to go with their recent victory against Brixham.
