After a season of difficult weather for Sidmouth croquet players, finalists of four internal tournaments faced another weekend of variable weather to determine the winners of sought after trophies. David Clarke beat Peter Miller in the Advanced Handicap Singles. Robert Hammond beat Ken Wallman for the Belmont Cup (low handicap players). The Devonia Cup for the high handicappers (18+) was won by Roger Hendy with the runner-up being David Laidler. The ladies' handicap singles (handicap 16 and below) and the Fermor Rose Bowl went to Margaret Piper who beat Sue Rogers. Budleigh Salterton Handicap Weekend took place in heavy rain and cold winds which made for uncomfortable play in a nevertheless enjoyable open handicap tournament. The difficult weather caused water to rest on several lawns and some games had to be moved mid-play. Fortunately Julie Horsley's calm and able management kept proceedings admirably on course. There were mixed fortunes for nine Sidmouth players in the Knockout Cup with Ian Friedlander getting the furthest - the semi final - losing his only match of the weekend to Derek Andrews. However, Ian, pictured above, went on to win seven out of eight games in the Egyptian allcomers competition and was presented with an inscribed goblet for his victory.
